The MLK Dream Big Parade returns Monday, Jan. 20.

Let us do all of the research so you don't have to! Here's our roundup of family-friendly events and things to do with kids in St. Petersburg for January 17-20.


Friday, January 17th


Open Gym at Bayside Sports Academy

Open Gym is open to children ages 6 & under every Friday. $8/child. 9:00-11:00am.


Babytime at Gulfport Public Library

If you have little ones under 2 years old, please join Gulfport Public Library for Babytime. There will be songs, books, lap bounce rhymes, and the opportunity to meet other caregivers with infants and young toddlers. Older siblings are also welcome. 10:00-10:30am.


Toddler Early Literacy Program at St. Petersburg Main Library

Come join the main library for storytime featuring movement, music, and fun with rhymes, stories, and puppets! For children ages 1 - 3 with a caregiver. 10:15am & 11:00am.


Preschool Story Time at Gulf Beaches Public Library

Join Gulf Beaches Public Library for songs, stories, and crafts with a "Winter" theme. 10:30am.


Disney Princess Tea Party at Largo Public Library

Whether you see yourself more as a Belle or a Merida, Largo Public Library promises you’ll have fun making royal crafts and snacking on sweet treats. Dress up is encouraged, and princes are also welcome to attend this special occasion. Registration required; ages 3-5. 11:00am & 4:00pm.


Come meet the nation’s premier college all-star players, NFL coaches, and Legend Team Captains at the new East-West Shrine Bowl Player Experience. You will be able to meet top NFL recruitment prospects from the best schools in the country, as well as current NFL coaches from a variety of teams in the league. Open and free to the public. 1:00-3:30pm.


After School Adventures at Barbara S. Ponce Library

Join Barbara S. Ponce Library after school for fun and exciting drop-in activities. Get hands-on and explore and learn by making art, playing games, doing science experiments, building fantastic creations, and investigating new worlds through books! Grades K & up. 3:30-4:30pm.


S.T.R.E.A.M. Club at Childs Park Library

Explore Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math at Childs Park Library's S.T.R.E.A.M. Club. Join in for hands-on science experiments, coding, stories, and more!For children grades 3 - 5. 4:15-5:00pm.


Kid's Night Out at Romp N Roll

Treat your kids ages 2 to 5 and yourself to a fun night out! Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run, play, dance, and have fun with energetic instructors. A pizza party dinner and bubble dance party are included. Children do not need to be potty-trained. $25/member, $30/non-member (sibling discount available). 6:00-9:00pm.


MLK Weekend Step Show at SPC College Gibbs Campus

Join MLK Dream Big for an exciting display of the most popular and energetic sororities and fraternities in the area! This show/competition will be held at the SPC campus in North St. Pete. Free reserved seating is sold out; $20 cover. 7:00-9:00pm.


Friday Night Shuffle at St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club

Friday nights are free and open to the public at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club! Bring your own food and beverages and enjoy the courts. 7:00-10:00pm.


Winter Skies at SPC Planetarium and Observatory

The cool winter nights offer some of the best stargazing of the year, with the great hunter Orion dominating the evening sky. Stop by and view the Great Orion Nebula, the Pleiades star cluster, and brilliant Venus with SPC's rooftop telescopes. Children ages 5 & up are welcome to attend the planetarium show. 7:00pm & 8:15pm.


Saturday, January 18th


New Year New You Fun Run at Highland Recreation Complex

Join Largo Recreation for a series of fun runs to keep you exercising as a family. Each fun run will have a special twist to keep them fun and engaging. Dress up, get silly, and have a blast running along the beautiful grounds of Highland Recreation. Preregistration is strongly recommended. $20 per family or $10 per person. 8:00-9:30am.


Free Synovus Kids' Classic Races at Sirata Beach Resort

Synovus Bank hosts free races for children 8 and under at the St. Pete Beach Classic. All children registered for the event receive a race shirt, goodie bag, race bib, finisher's medal, and a special Kids' Classic Post-Race Party! 8:45am.


The FUNdamentals at Azalea Recreation Center

St. Petersburg Parks & Recreation's Therapeutic Recreation Division and Healthy St. Pete present The FUNdamentals. This fun family program will help participants develop the Fundamental Movement Skills needed for lifelong physical activity. This unique program is specially designed for children and their families to learn these very important skills in a supportive, non-judgmental, and fun environment. Come have a blast while you play and learn tips for the whole family to use. 9:00-10:00am.

Weedon Walkabout at Weedon Island Preserve

Join in for a guided hike through the mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island Preserve. Learn about the coastal environment, native wildlife, and early history of the Preserve. This hike may be up to 2 miles (round trip). All ages are welcome but children younger than 6 years old may find this hike challenging. 9:00-11:00am.


Pop Up Open Playtime at Romp n' Roll

Pop Up Open Playtime is happening at Romp n' Roll this Saturday! Come play in the indoor playground for $10. Sign up online or call to register. 9:00am-12:00pm.


Saturday Morning Market at Al Lang Stadium

Find St. Petersburg's Saturday Morning Market in the parking lot of Al Lang Stadium every Saturday from October to May. This market is an extraordinary ode to great food, creative expression, and our wonderfully vibrant community. Come see what happens when you combine a Farmers Market, a Craft Fair, and a Festival into an amazing weekly gathering. 9:00am-2:00pm.


Wildflower Walk at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

A ranger-guided walk highlights native wildflowers along the trails. Learn more about what is blooming this month. All ages; $3/adult, $1.50/child. 9:30am.


Arbor Day Celebration at Sunken Gardens

Sunken Gardens will host an Arbor Day Celebration featuring kids' crafts, scavenger hunt, free tree seedlings, face painting, and a tree talk and stroll. Free with admission/membership. 10:00am-2:00pm.


Saturdays at the Morean Arts Center

Saturdays @ the Morean is a free family drop-in art studio hosted by the Morean Arts Center. Art activities are geared toward children ages 5 to 10. 10:00am-12:30pm & 1:00-3:30pm.


Taking place on Treasure Island Beach behind the Thunderbird Beach Resort. Windworks is sponsoring and gathering competitors from around the U.S. to perform on Treasure Island Beach during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Come be amazed by the talented kite flyers performing to music at this two-day event that includes dual-line and multi-line sport kite flying. 10:00am-5:00pm.


Little Surrealists Tour at The Dali Museum

Kids ages 4-11 are invited to bring their families on a special 1-hour Museum tour. Free with museum admission. 11:00am-12:00pm.


Storytime at Barnes & Noble

Join Barnes & Noble for a storytime and activities featuring "Nobody Hugs a Cactus." 11:00am-12:00pm.


Explore More! Family Day at the Museum of Fine Arts

Join the MFA every third Saturday of the month for a special day of family fun! With arts and crafts, family tours, and other special programming, there is so much to do at the MFA. Each month will feature a different theme so your family can explore again and again. Included with membership/admission. 11:00am-2:00pm.


MLK Music and Culture Festival at Albert Whitted Park

Join MLK Dream Big for the first Music and Culture Festival in beautiful downtown St. Petersburg. This free waterfront event will have vendors and live entertainment right in the heart of the thriving downtown area. 11:00am-7:00pm.


Flutes in the Park at Crescent Lake Park

Join Tutti Flutes for a fun and free afternoon in the park with flute music, musical games, and flutes to try for kids in all sizes. All ages welcome! Meet by the playground at Crescent Lake Park. 1:00-3:00pm.


East-West Shrine Bowl at Tropicana Field

Find out why the East-West Shrine Bowl is the premier college all-star football game in the nation! The perfect family event, the East-West Shrine Bowl is a unique opportunity to watch the best college football players compete for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children. The pre-game BBQ Tailgate Party begins at 11am. General admission tickets are $15. 3:00pm.


Party Under the Lights on Pass-a-Grille Beach

Party under the lights on Pass-a-Grille Beach at this free event featuring steel drums, live music, food and drinks, arts and crafts, and dancing in the street. 4:00-10:00pm.


BBQ & a Movie at Pinellas Pioneer Settlement

Enjoy the Pioneer Settlement after dark at this unique opportunity to enjoy some amazing BBQ and catch a flick. There will be open fields for kids to play in; bring blankets or chairs for viewing enjoyment. BBQ dinners, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase (cash only). $10/adult dinner, $6/kid dinner. Gates (#4) open at 6pm; the movie starts soon after. 6:00pm.


Sunday, January 19th


Sing N Stroll at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Take a kid-friendly walk into Boyd Hill Nature Preserve with Miss Colleen and The Muffin Man. Learn and sing about the natural world before taking a family stroll farther into this St. Pete gem. Walk times are 9:30am or 10:15am. Meet in the welcome center. Boyd Hill charges entrance to the preserve. There is no charge for the program. 9:30-11:00am.


Family Yoga Class at Peace of Yoga

Kidding Around Yoga Classes with Desiree utilize yoga poses creatively tucked into partner yoga, games and activities, original music, stories and more. This yoga class is specifically designed for kids (2 and older), but moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers are welcome! Donations accepted. 10:00-11:00am.


Corey Avenue Sunday Market at St. Pete Beach

Find this market located on Corey Avenue in St. Pete Beach. This market hosts 70+ local vendors selling local and conventional produce, plants, herbs, raw honey, take-home foods, artisan products, fresh baked goods, lunch bites, local art, handcrafts, and more! Fun for all ages and dog-friendly. 10:00am-2:00pm.

Sundays at the Morean Center for Clay

Sundays @ The Morean is a free family drop-in Clay Play Session hosted by the Morean Center for Clay. Clay, tools and working tables provided, please bring your imagination. This session is open to all families with children (not recommended for children under 3 years old). 1:00-3:00pm.


Yoga and Mindfulness for Kids at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Children learn the basics of yoga and meditation through movement, games, and songs. The 2pm session is for kids ages 4-7; the 3pm session is for kids ages 8-13. Bring a mat and water. $10. 2:00pm & 3:00pm.

MLK Dream Big Band Showcase at Campbell Park

Do you want to get a sneak peek of some of the bands that will be in the 2020 MLK Dream Big parade? Join MLK Dream Big at the Campbell Park football field, as the bands warm-up for their big debut in the parade lineup of one of the nation’s largest and longest-running MLK parades! Free family fun. 5:00-8:00pm.

Monday, January 20th


MLK Dream Big Parade in Downtown St. Petersburg

In its 35th year, St. Petersburg’s MLK Dream Big Parade is the nation’s longest-running parade honoring Dr. Martin Luther King! This legendary parade is held right in the heart of beautiful downtown St. Petersburg. The parade route starts at 3rd St. and 1st Ave S. then ends at Tropicana Field. Join over 50,000 others to celebrate such an impactful man. 11:00am-1:00pm.


MLK Dream Big Family Fun Day at Tropicana Field

Join MLK Dream Big in Tropicana Field parking lots 6 & 7 immediately following the 35th Annual MLK Parade for the MLK Dream Big Family Fun Day for more free entertainment, information, and fun for the entire family. 2:00-8:00pm.
