Weekend Guide: September 13 - 15

There's a rare harvest moon on the rise and it's Friday the 13th -- things could get weird this weekend. So why not set your superstitions aside and let us help find ways to keep your kids entertained in the St. Petersburg, Florida area. We're sharing our top picks below. And if you want to get a good look at the Harvest Moon, you’ll have to stay up past bedtime to see it at its peak at 12:33 am ET on September 14th.


Friday, September 13th


Open Gym at Bayside Sports Academy

Open Gym is open to children ages 6 & under every Friday. $8/child. 9:00-11:00am.


Babytime at Gulfport Public Library

If you have little ones under 2 years old, please join Gulfport Public Library for Babytime. There will be songs, books, lap bounce rhymes, and the opportunity to meet other caregivers with infants and young toddlers. Older siblings are also welcome. 10:00-10:30am.


Toddler Early Literacy Program at St. Petersburg Main Library

Come join the main library for story time featuring movement, music and fun with rhymes, stories, and puppets! For children ages 1 - 3 with a caregiver. 10:15am & 11:00am.


Free Story Time at The Littlest Trunk

Join The Littlest Trunk in their Community Room for "Story Time" with Angie Durkin, with UsBorne books and more. 1:00pm.


Afternoons at the Library at Barbara S. Ponce Public Library

Grades K and up can join the library after school for fun and exciting drop-in activities. Get hands-on and explore and learn by making art, playing games, doing science experiments, building fantastic creations, and investigating new worlds through books. 3:30-4:30pm.


S.T.R.E.A.M. Club at Childs Park Library

Explore Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math at Childs Park Library's S.T.R.E.A.M. Club. Join in for hands-on science experiments, coding, stories, and more!

For children grades 3 - 5. 4:15-5:00pm.


Family Game Night at Great Explorations Children's Museum

Gather your crew and join Great Ex for Family Game Night. There will be board games, giant games, WII games and some family challenges involving exhibits. The amazing ‘Emcee Johnny G’ will keep the party hopping! The event cost for members is $40 for up to 5 family members and for non-members is $50 for up to 5 family members.  Additional individual tickets can be purchased for $10/per person if needed.  All children under 12 months are free.  The cost covers entry and games.  Food and treats will be available for purchase at the event. 6:00-9:00pm.


Kid's Night Out at Romp N Roll

Treat your kids ages 2 to 5 and yourself to a fun night out! Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run, play, dance, and have fun with energetic instructors. A pizza party dinner and bubble dance party are included. Children do not need to be potty-trained. $25/member, $30/non-member (sibling discount available). 6:00-9:00pm.


Parents Night Out/Friday Night Fun at Highland Recreation Complex

Kids will have a blast playing fun games throughout the facility including the gym, PlayWorld, and the game room. The snack shop will be open for purchases. Younger children are offered separate activities in the preschool room and must be potty trained. Cost: HC $70/$140 per season, Drop-in fee: $7/$14. 6:30-9:30pm.


Music in the Park at Seminole City Park

Meet at Seminole City Park for the 23rd year of this music series running six weeks during September and October. Free concert, free parking. Food and beverage available for purchase. 7:00-9:00pm.


Friday Night Shuffle at St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club

Friday nights are free and open to the public at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club! Bring your own food and beverages and enjoy the courts. 7:00-10:00pm.

"Summer Nights" at SPC Planetarium and Observatory

Explore the stars without trekking far from home, for a price that's out of this world: free! The planetarium offers two free public shows on Friday nights at 7pm and 8:15pm when the college is in session. Shows are hosted by resident astronomer Dr. Craig Joseph and feature live narration with images displayed by computer-controlled projectors. First-come, first-served seating; ages 5 & up. 7:00pm & 8:15pm.


Saturday, September 14th


Work Day at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Spend the morning, working alongside a ranger! Learn how to identify native and non-native plants and help to remove exotic invasive plants from the preserve. Cost is free; ages 8 & up. 8:00-11:00am.


5K Fun Run with Healthy St. Pete at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Practice healthy habits while making new friends! All levels welcome. Meet at the flag pole in front of the nature center. Cost is free; all ages. 9:00am.


Weedon Walkabout at Weedon Island Preserve

Join in for a guided hike through the mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island Preserve. Learn about the coastal environment, native wildlife, and early history of the Preserve. This hike may be up to 2 miles (round trip). All ages are welcome but children younger than 6 years old may find this hike challenging. 9:00-11:00am.


Free Fun Day with Soccer Shots at BT Sports Academy

Join Soccer Shots for a free fun day where you can come out and play leading up to the season at their newest location. Everyone who attends will be entered to win a free season at this new location for the fall. This event is free but registration is required. 9:30-11:30am.


Meet Peppa & George Pig for their first time Sky Zone! $18 per child includes: free accompanying adults; character meet, greet, and jump; themed arts & crafts; and photo ops. 9:30-11:00am.


Kids Yoga at The Littlest Trunk

Join The Littlest Trunk for a joyful children’s yoga class featuring high energy songs, playful poses, mindful breathing, and even a little meditation. The class is targeted to children ages 2-5, but all ages are welcome. Caregivers are encouraged to join in the fun! 10:00am.


Saturdays at the Morean Arts Center

Saturdays @ the Morean is a free family drop-in art studio hosted by the Morean Arts Center. Art activities are geared toward children ages 5 to 10. 10:00am-12:30pm & 1:00-3:30pm.


How to Catch a Mermaid at Practically Pikasso

Practically Pikasso's magical under the sea party is for guests of all ages! Join to read “How To Catch A Mermaid” and paint a magical mermaid pottery piece. They will have special “Fairy Dust” paint to add shimmer to your mermaid tail and a few other magical surprises - including a visit from a favorite land loving mermaid. Cost is $28 per painter when you register in advance or $32 per painter for walk ins (if space allows). 10:30am-12:00pm.


Family Day: Upcycled Creations at The James Museum

Explore amazing art inspired by the natural world, discover ways to help the planet, and create an “upcycled” sculpture in the museum studio. Family Day features story time, a kid-friendly tour, and an artmaking workshop. Best for ages 3–10; children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited; reservations recommended. Included with admission; free for members. 10:30am-12:30pm.


Alligator Walk at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Learn about the American alligator, Florida’s state reptile, which calls our wetlands home on this guided, all-ages walk. Cost is $3/adult or $1.50/child. 11:00am.


Drag Queen Story Hour at Community Cafe

Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish. 11:00am-12:00pm.


Little Surrealists Tour at The Dali Museum

Kids ages 4-11 are invited to bring their families on a special 1-hour Museum tour. Free with museum admission. 11:00am-12:00pm.


Storytime at Barnes & Noble

Join Barnes & Noble for a storytime and activities featuring "Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party." 11:00am-12:00pm.


Imagine THAT! at Imagine Museum

Come and make rain sticks to honor the music theme of Smithsonian Free Museum Day taking place onSeptember 21st. Want to help recycle? Bring your own paper towel roll. Included with admission/membership (free admission for kids 10 & under). 11:00am-3:00pm.


Library Legos at Largo Public Library Challenge yourself to create a new LEGO masterpiece every week. All materials are provided. Ages 5 to 12. 2:00-4:00pm.


Children ages 4-11 can discover the creative world of Dali through games, puzzles and arts + crafts activities which educate and encourage family interaction. Cost is free. 12:00-2:30pm.


Creature Feature at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Live animal encounter! Learn interesting facts about a program animal featured at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve every Saturday and Sunday. 2:30pm.


Whether you are enjoying an evening out for ArtWalk, a good movie, or a long dinner, Peace of Yoga is offering a 3-hour mini-camp for parents to have a night out, guilt-free. Meanwhile, your kids will be engaged by activities promoting mindfulness, peace, and compassion using breathing techniques, Yoga postures, and meditation to help manage daily stressors and big emotions. Light snack and take-home craft included. For ages 6-12; $35/child, $25/each additional sibling. 5:00-8:00pm.


The Central Arts District, EDGE District, Grand Central District, Warehouse Arts District and downtown Waterfront District unite for the St. Petersburg Second Saturday ArtWalk. Studios and galleries stay open late to welcome visitors from 5-9 pm. Many ArtWalk studios/galleries celebrate the opening of brand new exhibitions during ArtWalk. Discover wonderful surprises, visit your favorite artist or find a new one. The Downtown Looper Trolley is now part of ArtWalk on Second Saturdays taking visitors to all of the galleries in the Waterfront District with stops every 15 minutes. 5:00-9:00pm.


Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium

Cheer on the Rowdies as they take on Atlanta United 2 at home. 7:30pm.


Sunday, September 15th


Family Yoga Class at Peace of Yoga

Kidding Around Yoga Classes with Desiree utilize yoga poses creatively tucked into partner yoga, games and activities, original music, stories and more. This yoga class is specifically designed for kids (2 and older), but moms, dads, grandparents and other caregivers are welcome! Donations accepted. 10:00-11:00am.


Corey Avenue Sunday Market at St. Pete Beach

Find this market located on Corey Avenue in St. Pete Beach. This market hosts 70+ local vendors selling local and conventional produce, plants, herbs, raw honey, take home foods, artisan products, fresh baked goods, lunch bites, local art, hand crafts and more! Fun for all ages and dog-friendly. 10:00am-2:00pm.


Bird of Prey Encounter at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Join Boyd Hill for a 30 minute bird of prey show to get an up close look at a beautiful avian ambassador and learn how you can help birds of prey. Included with preserve admission. 10:00am.


Baby & Me Storytime at Barnes & Noble

Baby & Me Storytime is for caregivers and children 0-24 months old. Join in to read a book and participate in activities featuring sensory growth for your little ones. Plus, get a free Starbucks tall, hot or iced coffee (Café stores only). 11:00am.


PJ Library: Rosh Hashanah & The Honeybee at the Museum of Fine Arts

Join PJ Library and The Jewish Federation of Florida's Gulf Coast as Allison Davis from Noble Nectar Apiaries takes participants through visual and interactive displays of bee colonies and a fully contained observation hive. The event will conclude with a honey and apple tasting while listening to a PJ Library story. This event is for children under 8 with their parents and caregivers. 1:30am-3:30pm.


Chess Club at Barbara S. Ponce Public Library

Does your K-12 grader enjoy playing chess? Are they interested in learning the game? If so, join the library for Chess Club to learn the game or put their skills to the test! This program is run by teen volunteers. Registration required. Stop by or call Youth Services at 727-369-0664 to register. 1:30-2:30pm.
