A list of kid-friendly events in St. Petersburg, Florida.

National Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 8th!

The first weekend of the month is always full, and September is no exception. Throw in National Grandparents Day this Sunday, and the weekend is looking extra fun. We're listing our favorite events below to make it easy for you to spend some QT with your family (grandparents included). Of course, you can always find even more things to do on our full calendar.


Friday, September 6th


Open Gym at Bayside Sports Academy

Open Gym is open to children ages 6 & under every Friday. $8/child. 9:00-11:00am.


Terrific Tots at Great Explorations Children's Museum

On Wednesday and Friday mornings while Pinellas County Schools are in and before Great Ex opens to the public, members are invited to join in for songs, movement, art and story time in Great Beginnings at the museum! Terrific Tots is a unique bonding experience for children ages 1-3 and their caregivers. This program is FREE an available for members only. 9:30am.


Babytime at Gulfport Public Library

If you have little ones under two years old, please join Gulfport Public Library for Babytime on Fridays. You will sing songs, read books, enjoy lap bounce rhymes, and meet other caregivers with infants and young toddlers. Older siblings are also welcome. 10:00-10:30am.


Preschool Story Time at Gulf Beaches Public Library

Join Gulf Beaches Public Library for songs, stories, and crafts with a "Letter F" theme. 10:30am.


Tales and Treats with Grandparents at Largo Public Library

Grandparent’s Day is coming on Sunday. Come hear some stories about how awesome grandparents are and then share in some sweet treats sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face. Registration required; ages 3 to 5. 11:00am-12:00pm.


Afternoons @ the Library at Barbara S. Ponce Public Library

Join the library after school for fun and exciting drop-in activities. Get hands-on and explore and learn by making art, playing games, doing science experiments, building fantastic creations, and investigating new worlds through books! Grades K & up. 3:30-4:30pm.


Kid's Night Out at Romp N Roll

Treat your kids ages 2 to 5 and yourself to a fun night out! Parents get an evening to themselves while the children get to run, play, dance, and have fun with energetic instructors. A pizza party dinner and bubble dance party are included. Children do not need to be potty-trained. $25/member, $30/non-member (sibling discount available). 6:00-9:00pm.


Flick N Float at Southwest Pool (Largo)

Bring your favorite float or chair from home and join Largo Rec for a Friday night family movie. Vendors will be onsite with snacks for sale. Ralph Breaks the Internet begins at 7pm. Cost is $5/person and is open to all ages. 6:30-10:00pm.


Parents Night Out/Friday Night Fun at Highland Recreation Complex

Kids will have a blast playing fun games throughout the facility including the gym, PlayWorld, and the game room. The snack shop will be open for purchases. Younger children are offered separate activities in the preschool room and must be potty trained. Register for the season for a discounted rate and faster check-in. Child registration is required for each participant. Cost: HC $70/$140 per season, drop-in fee: $7/$14. 6:30-9:30pm.

"Summer Nights" at SPC Planetarium and Observatory

Explore the stars without trekking far from home, for a price that's out of this world: free! The planetarium offers two free public shows on Friday nights at 7pm and 8:15pm when the college is in session. Shows are hosted by resident astronomer Dr. Craig Joseph and feature live narration with images displayed by computer-controlled projectors. First-come, first-served seating; ages 5 & up. 7:00pm & 8:15pm.


Music in the Park at Seminole City Park

Meet at Seminole City Park for the 23rd year of this annual music series running six weeks during September and October. Free concert, free parking. Food and beverage available for purchase. 7:00-9:00pm.


Friday Night Shuffle at St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club

Friday nights are free and open to the public at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club! Bring your own food and beverages and enjoy the courts. 7:00-10:00pm.


Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field

It's $7.11 ticket night at The Trop! Cheer on the Rays as they play the Blue Jays. Stop by any participating 7-Eleven to get your discounted ticket voucher. 7:10pm.


Saturday, September 7th


Bird Walk at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Look for birds on a guided, all-ages hike led by expert birders. Binoculars are available for loan. Cost is free! 8:00am.


Kids Workshop at The Home Depot

Harvest the fun during this hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a scarecrow planter. Your young farmer can learn how a seed grows while you help them construct a festive home for their plant. They will sand, glue, and paint pieces of wood to create this holiday planter. All Kids Workshop attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron and a commemorative pin while supplies last. 9:00am-12:00pm.


Meet the whole Paw Patrol gang! $18 per child includes: free accompanying adults; character meet, greet, and jump with Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, and Skye; themed arts & crafts; and photo ops. 9:30-11:00am.


Nature's Elements at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Children ages 3 to 6 will enjoy nature walks, art, games, songs, and stories with environmental educator Amalia Fernand from Nature Explorers International in this drop-off program. This week, participants will learn how to identify Florida seashells and the creatures that once lived inside of them, make sand candles, and more. Cost is $15. 9:30am-12:30pm.


International Vulture Awareness Day at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Celebrate our bald but beautiful friends! International Vulture Awareness Day is a day to learn how important these misunderstood birds are to us and our environment. This is a great event for families. There will be crafts, games, and live vultures for you to meet. Cost is $3/adult and $1.50/child. 10:00am-12:00pm.


During this beginning workshop, children ages 7 & up will learn all about the sewing machine and spend time with lots of guided (and patient) practice. Students will learn how to thread a machine, fill and insert bobbins, sew straight and curved lines, basic pinning skills, and more. Afterwards they'll put their new skills to use with a small sewing project. This class is the pre-requisite to all of makeme's other kids sewing workshops. 10:00am-12:00pm.


Open Tree Climb at Pathfinder Outdoor Education

Pathfinder's trained facilitators take you through a brief ground school and then you can climb at your own pace into the canopy of a gorgeous live oak. Anyone ages 6 and up can climb - it's not just for kids! And it's FREE for every climber. 10:00am-2:00pm.


Saturdays at the Morean Arts Center

Saturdays @ the Morean is a free family drop-in art studio hosted by the Morean Arts Center. Art activities are geared toward children ages 5 to 10. 10:00am-12:30pm & 1:00-3:30pm.


Largo Central Railroad at Largo Central Park

Join Largo Central Railroad for a ride around beautiful Largo Central Park on the miniature railroad. The accurately modeled scale locomotives pull you and your family along a mile long loop through great scenery, the spooky tunnel and our waterfall pond. Fun for all ages! 10:00am-4:00pm.


Little Surrealists Tour at The Dali Museum

Kids ages 4-11 are invited to bring their families on a special one-hour Museum tour. Free with museum admission. 11:00am-12:00pm.


Storytime at Barnes & Noble

Celebrate Barnes & Noble's one millionth Storytime this weekend! Join them to read the never-before-released Dr. Seuss book, "Dr. Seuss's Horse Museum," about creating and looking at art. Plus, stay for activities and giveaways including free crayons (while supplies last) and enjoy samples from the Café (Café stores only). 11:00am.


Pioneer Open House at Pinellas Pioneer Settlement

Step back in time for a relaxing afternoon with family and friends at this free, all-ages open house. The tour of buildings begins at 11:30am. 11:00am-2:00pm.


Children ages 4-11 can discover the creative world of Dali through games, puzzles and arts + crafts activities which educate and encourage family interaction. Cost is free. 12:00-2:30pm.


Mommy & Me Jasmine and Rajah Set at Painting with a Twist

Make some magic to celebrate the release of Aladdin on DVD and Blue Ray. Paint these Disney inspired characters with your child (ages 7 & up) while you can -- it's the only time Painting with a Twist will offer this class. Cost is $35. 1:00-3:00pm.

Sunday, September 8th


Grandparents Day Breakfast at Southwest Recreation Complex

Celebrate your grandparents on Grandparents Day with a breakfast at Southwest Rec! There will be breakfast, fun activities, and crafting together. Cost is $8/person before 9/1 and $10/person after 9/1. This event is open to ages 10 and under, and of course, grandparents. Sign up at Southwest Recreation Complex. 9:00-11:00am.


Aviary Tour: Eastern Screech Owls at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Get a behind the scenes look! See how Boyd Hill employees run the Birds of Prey program and have an up close encounter with the bird of the month. $3/adult, $1.50/child. 10:00am.


Great Connections at Great Explorations Children's Museum

For this event, Great Explorations Children’s Museum will open early for children with special needs and their families to enjoy Great Connections, a sensory-friendly event. Great Explorations will close to the public, offer discounted admission and provide a “cool down” room for families who need to take a break. Cost is $5 per person or free for members. 10:00am-12:00pm.

Corey Avenue Sunday Market at St. Pete Beach

This St. Pete Beach market located on Corey Avenue hosts 70+ local vendors selling local and conventional produce, plants, herbs, raw honey, take home foods, artisan products, fresh baked goods, lunch bites, local art, hand crafts and more! Fun for all ages and dog-friendly. 10:00am-2:00pm.


Insect Trek at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Butterflies, bugs and beetles oh my! Join Boyd Hill for a guided hike exploring the secret lives of insects! Fun and informative for all ages. $3/adult, $1.50/child. 11:30am.


Family Yoga Class at Peace of Yoga

Kidding Around Yoga Classes with Desiree utilize yoga poses creatively tucked into partner yoga, games and activities, original music, stories and more. This yoga class is specifically designed for kids (2 and older), but moms, dads, grandparents and other caregivers are welcome! Donations accepted. 11:30am-12:30pm.


Sundays at the Morean Center for Clay

Sundays @ The Morean is a free family drop-in Clay Play Session hosted by the Morean Center for Clay. Clay, tools and working tables provided, please bring your imagination. This session is open to all families with children (not recommended for children under 3 years old). 1:00-3:00pm.


Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field

Every Sunday home game is Rays Family Fun Day! This Sunday, the Rays play the Blue Jays. All fans ages 14 & under will receive a Rays pillowcase set. 1:10pm.


Chess Club at Barbara S. Ponce Public Library

Does your K-12 grader enjoy playing chess? Are they interested in learning the game? If so, join the library for Chess Club to learn the game or put their skills to the test! This program is run by teen volunteers. Registration required. Stop by or call Youth Services at 727-369-0664 to register. 1:30-2:30pm.


Grandparents Day Celebration at Barbara S. Ponce Public Library

Parents and children ages 5 and younger can celebrate National Grandparents Day at the library by creating a special gift to give to their grandparents. Registration required. 2:00-3:00pm.


2nd Sunday at Tampa Bay Turners

Join Tampa Bay Turners every second Sunday for open gym (ages 4 & under) and swim (all ages). Cost is $10/family. 3:00-5:00pm.
